405 TEXAS IN 2050
PROF. MARIA PENALVER
Over the past 25 years, a new urban fabric engulfed the Texas terrain. The water has become infested with red algae, and the citizens of Texas are now fearful of where they can go to avoid the toxic environment. This leads to the abandonment of rural infrastructure, an ignorance of wildlife, and an ever-growing urban population that current cities are not able to sustain for the long term. To cope with their ever-changing and decaying environment, the digital world of social media provides comfort and an escape from reality.
Cut to 2050. A solution is now proposed. A new typology and purpose have been given
to the world’s water towers. Urban towers have become the supply of clean, fresh water to the population as they take over the urban environment. Rural towers have been designated as the primary filtration plant for removing red algae, and it will be sent into the cities as a form of medicine to vaccinate the population against red algae, as well as prevent and address other harmful diseases. These towers are a vital function to the salvation efforts. Water filtration in the rural areas of Texas will be a beacon of hope to draw Texans back out into the farmlands and outskirts to address Texas’s cash crops and cattle ranches that have since been forgotten.
